Below are twelve simple things you should do to ensure that you are operating the equipment safely. (These tips apply to riding lawn mower safety as well.)
Fuel your tractor when the engine is cold. If you run out of gas before finishing your job, make sure to turn of the tractor and let the engine cool before refueling.
- Always dress appropriately. Wear long pants, close fitting clothing, and sturdy footwear.
- Clear children and pets away from the work area before starting up the tractor. It is also a good idea to clear the area of any low lying toys or furniture as well.
- Do not start or otherwise operate your machine unless you are in the operator’s seat.
- Do not dismount while the machine is moving. Make sure to observe manufacturer recommended guidelines before dismounting.
- Never carry any passengers; your lawn tractor is built for the driver/operator only.
- When working on uneven terrain make sure to move across slopes rather than up and down them.
- Reduce your speed when moving around sharp corners or up/down slopes in order to avoid tipping over.
- Periodically inspect your machine for an accumulation of grass or garden trimmings, or excessive grease.
- Periodically inspect for missing or damaged guards.
- Periodically inspect for loose belts.
- Bring your machine in to an authorized service dealer annually for service and inspection.
